Honoring Mother's Day

Why is there a Mother's Day?
To me there is a Mother's Day to honor the women in our lives. We honor our Mother's, our Sister's, our Grandmother's, our Daughter's, and our friend's. Mother's Day is a day of celebration....for most. Mother's Day this year is going to be tough for my Sister's as our biological mother passed away in September. Sandy did not lead a life that most would enjoy but she is their Mother non the least. She is all they had, she was challenging and difficult, but she was their mother!

Unfortunately Sandy died with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer. This is not something I ever thought that I would have in my family! I have had the unfortunate opportunity to know many women with whom I have admired and looked up to effected by Breast Cancer. For this reason I have opted to challenge myself and participate in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure in July. I have chosen to walk 60 miles in 3 days -- this will definitely be a huge physical and emotional challenge for me! But in order to successfully complete this challenge I need to help of all of my friends and family! I need to raise $2300 for the Komen foundation -- I am currently at $340 so I only have $1970 to go.

So in May, we honor all of the women in our lives - mothers, sisters, daughters, friends - by helping to build a world without breast cancer. Please consider donating in honor of a woman who is important to you. Please help me so we won't have to sit back while breast cancer robs another grandmother of the chance to see her grandchildren grow up, or prevents best friends from growing old together. I am walking because I believe that everyone deserves a lifetime.

Help me reach my goal for the Susan G. Komen Boston 3-Day for the Cure!

I'm still alive, I promise....

I really am still alive, although you wouldn't know it by this blog. I am in survival mode --
- trying to finish my last semester of school
- starting to study for my NCLEX exam
- working at the hospital
- prepping for my summer of road races
- thinking about participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day this summer
- trying to keep up with chores around the house
- applying for entrance into BSN programs
- trying to be a good Mom and wife

When I get through all this, I'll be back....I promise!

Fall Fun...

We have had a lot of fun the past couple of months. In September Jesse and I were able to go away for the weekend to attend a friends wedding. Jesse was the "Man of Honor" and I had the honor of being the photographer for the event. It was a lot of fun and we had a great weekend!
The kids also have enjoyed helping with the yard work at the house....of course their idea of helping is jumping in the leave piles and scattering them everywhere! But they had a lot of fun!
This year was also the first year that the kids were able to decorate their own pumpkins. They made a huge mess, but they had a blast doing it. We also let the kids pick out their own Halloween costumes - so we had a Bakugon Dan, Sleeping Beauty, and Tinkerbell. The kids looked really cute, unfortunately we were not able to go trick or treating.... 10 minutes before we were to head out Haylee had a bad allergic reaction to something and I had to take her to the emergency room (she is OK). There is always next year for Trick or Treat, right?

A Month of Ups and Downs and Downs and Ups...

Where to start....

It has definitely been a long trying couple of weeks! First off I went back to school last week.... where did the summer go? I feel like I just took my final yesterday and now I am back..... AAARRRGGGG. Oh well, I have to just remember that I graduate in May. If I can keep that in mind I know I will get through these next couple of semesters!

I am still working 24 hours a week at the hospital on top of school and that can get a little taxing.... I don't feel like I get a break after school all week and work all weekend, but it will pay off in the end, right?

On a happier note my brother got married a few weeks ago! It was surreal to see my little Ricky marrying the love of his life! Julia is great! I also had the privilege of being able to take the photos for the wedding. I think most of them came out great, I hope they liked them?!?!?

Unfortunately the happy times ended last Friday when I got a call to tell me that my biological mother, Sandy, had passed away. Over the years I had wondered if she was alive or if she did pass if anyone would tell me and how I would even feel about it....well all that wondering came to a close on Friday night. An in all honesty, I was really upset on Saturday and I couldn't really figure out why. But the more I thought about it I think I figured out why I was so sad... I was sad about the things Sandy missed out on. She never met my kids, she never had the honor of knowing them and knowing the joy they bring into the lives of others. She will never see my sisters get married and have children...for those things I am sad. "Mothering" was not something that Sandy was good at and unfortunately she underestimated the talents that she was blessed with so for that I know she is in a better place.

Sandy's passing did allow for the Sine family to be able to all get together, which hasn't happening in about 12 years!! And although it was a sad time it was a great time. As a family we were able to lean on each other and remember the good times and have some laughs and enjoy each other's company. I would hope that that would be something that Sandy would have wanted!

And lastly I accomplished a goal for the year today. This morning Jesse and I packed up our things and headed into Salem for the SalemFest 5K. At the beginning of the year I decided that I wanted to run in a 5K and I thought that I would run in one in June, but that didn't happen....so when this one came up I decided to go for it! I had a couple goals going into this race... 1) Finish the race and 2) complete the race in under 45 minutes. So I did finish the race (and I wasn't last) and I did it in 38:00 minutes!! And it was SO much fun!! Jesse ran next to me the entire time, which was awesome -- even though I think he probably could have run laps around me! We had so much fun that we have decided to do more races and we are even thinking about possibly training to run a half marathon next year!

After all of the stress and sadness of the past week it was definitely nice to be able to end on a good note and I definitely needed the race to blow off some stress. The race also renewed my fitness spirit that I had lost track of over the summer. I need to work on doing more things for me and I think running on a regular basis will help my mental health in the long run!!

What a month!!

So April was not the best month for me; stress wise, but in the end it was all worth it! Let's see where should we begin....

I guess we can start with the house first...to make a very long story short -- we closed on the house on May 1st. And in the end that is all that matters right? Of course it was a VERY stressful and frusterating situation. We move into the house next weekend!

On the health front...I did OK this month. I know that I could have done much better, but I am an emotional eater, so with the stress of the house I ate alot of crap alot pf the time. So I ended the month at 206.4; I will do better in May! I finished up my time with my personal trainer last week and we re-took the Physical Fitness Evaluation that I had taken back in January and to my surprise I did considerably better. The results are below, so that I can look back on them later and try to beat them again!!

Test: January '09/ April '09
Weight: 229 / 206
Body Composition (this is when they use the little pinchy tool):
Tricep: 36 / 27
Abdomen: 32 / 21
Quadracep: 35 / 32
BMI: 32.85 (Obese) / 29.55 (overweight)
Upper Body Strength: 6 / 10
Grip Strength: Fair / Excellent
Lower Body Strength: 12 / 18
Pushups in 1 min.: 20 / 40
Curl-Ups in 1 min.: 40 / 66
Cardio Fitness: Level Marginal / Good

On the school front... my semester is almost over, and I can't wait! It looks like I will end the semester with a B. Which in the grand scheme of things isn't too bad considering I didn't really study this semester! I will buckle down in the fall and get my A back!!
